Hi, fellow photographers. I'm Dale Baskin, DPReview's Managing Editor, and I'm standing in for Abby this week while she takes some well-deserved vacation. It's the height of summer here in the northern hemisphere, and our staff is taking every opportunity to get out of the office to test gear – and to take photos.

That distinction matters. We spend a lot of time evaluating cameras, shooting test scenes, and analyzing features. But there's no substitute for getting out to shoot, and summer is a great season to keep a camera with you and see what happens, particularly for those of us in the Pacific Northwest, where winter is famously dreary.

Summer gives us long days and beautiful light late into the evening. It's also a time we can photograph things that aren't available the rest of the year, like county fairs, outdoor concerts, ballgames, or just kids running through a sprinkler on a hot day. That’s why we all carry our cameras this time of year. And for DPReview editors, often more than one.

Summer hasn't stopped the industry, though, and this week’s issue includes important news, community highlights, photography posts that caught our attention, and a couple of things that fit the season. As always, hit reply to say hello, share feedback, or tell us what you're shooting this summer.

Firmware Updates

Firmware updates don’t always make it into the headlines, but they can provide meaningful updates to the gear you already own. Here are a couple of important ones that crossed our desk this week.

  • Tamron announced firmware 3.0 for its versatile 25-200mm F2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 zoom lens. While it’s not uncommon for lens firmware to improve compatibility or performance, Tamron’s latest update does something we don’t see often: it adds new capabilities to the lens. Specifically, it improves the lens’s macro capabilities, allowing it to achieve at least 1:2 reproduction from 27-70mm. Updates can be applied using the Tamron Lens Utility.

  • Panasonic released firmware updates for several of its S series full-frame lenses, enabling the focus ring to be used as a control ring assignable to several key camera functions. It also allows the focus rotation direction to be changed when using manual focus. The update covers the following models: the S 14-28mm F4-5.6, the S 18-40mm F4.5-6.3, the S 28-200mm F4-7.1, and the S 70-300mm F4.5-5.6. You can learn more and download the updates at Panasonic’s firmware update page.

As I mentioned in the intro, we’re at the peak of summer, and pretty much all we can think about (other than cameras, of course) is fun in the sun, which is why this picture in our Nikon Z forum caught our attention this week. It’s part of a series of surfing photos shared by forum member ajr images, captured at this week's US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California.
